Meet the Lumière Dreamers: AJ Simmons

Known for her fierce determination and brazenly unapologetic heart, AJ Simmons is a Queer Mestiza performing artist. A Flamenco Flamenco Bailaora (Dancer) and Cantaora (Singer), she performs at local community events, restaurants and dance festivals. With the support of the BC Arts Council AJ is currently being mentored by Oscar Nieto and Kasandra ‘La China’ of Mozaico Flamenco to develop her Flamenco practice and performance through a decolonized and queer lens. AJ worked in Canadian theatre, film/ tv for 9 years and works regularly as a Voice Over Artist. She is a Sexual Assault Response worker with a local rape crisis centre and has volunteered ongoingly with the Vancouver Womens Health Collective on the DTES for 5 years in a variety of roles, including Chair of the Board of Directors. With a passion for storytelling, and a diverse foundation in classical theatre and dance, AJ offers an intersectional, complex and trauma informed approach to every process.
