“The Music Box Dancers”

Small Stage is In our fourth year creating mixed reality dance experiences #onRobson. Winter’s Dance combines live and digital dance to create unique and innovative experiences designed to draw audiences into public spaces.  

This season, Small Stage presents “The Music Box Dancers”.

Inspired by Frank Mills “The Music Box Dancer” featured three key characters and an original music score by Patrick Pennefather~

  • Hip Hop Steampunk Dancer on a pocket watch,

  • Tap Dancer on a Gramophone,

  • Contemporary Ballerina on a Jewelry Box.

Audience members were invited to walk around the 1100 Block of Robson Street and experience a public art performance on a non-linear narrative on a 15-minute loop that running continuously from 6-9pm each night.

Small Stage transformed Robson Street to create an innovative public space experience that included three key elements~

  • LARGE SCALE PROJECTIONS ~ a 15 minute non-linear dance video loop with an original sound composition.

  • LIVE DANCE ~ our Music Box Dancers.

  • INTERACTIVE ~ our Augmented Reality Mobile App. Download our app on IOS .

AWARD ~

this project was the winner of the “2018 Best in the West for Special Events” Business Improvement Areas of British Columbia.

ABOUT~

The Robson Street Business Association (RSBA), in collaboration with Small Stage brings artists and audiences together through unexpected dance and public art works amidst the hustle and bustle of downtown Robson Street. “Winter’s Dance #onRobson provides a great opportunity to reimagine public space and create something unexpected and memorable for visitors to Robson Street,” explains Teri Smith, Executive Director of the RSBA.

Julie-anne Saroyan of Small Stage adds, “I am excited to see another unique collaboration between Small Stage and Robson Street to bring the arts to a public space for everyone to enjoy. It's the perfect setting to create a bit of holiday magic.”
